BirthWise Doula Services
I use that first-hand knowledge now to serve my clients with not just my rigorous training and certification through Birth Arts International, but also through my own personal experiences. And my crunchy soul sisters, don’t let me coming from a hospital background give you pause. I know hospitals can get a bad rep, I get it, but the reality is that most women in the US give birth in a hospital setting at this point in time. So if that’s where I’ll be helping you welcome your sweet baby, I want you to know I see your yearning for an intervention free birth. I see you believing in your body and your natural ability to birth. I see you wanting all the time in the world to bring your baby earthside.

Sage Mama Doula, owned and operated by Sarah Eiley Cowherd, serves the Charlotte, NC area with a combination of maternal instincts and belief in the wisdom of women. Sage Mama Doula provides continuous support during the pregnancy and beyond, aiming to help ease the minds of expecting families throughout the metro area.

I'm Monica, a DONA International trained birth and postpartum Doula. After completing my training, I broadened my scope with additional training in the areas of infant/child CPR, choking and injury prevention, car seat safety, support in neonatal resuscitation and prenatal and infant loss support. As far as I can remember I have always been fascinated by the ability women have to grow, birth and nurture their babies. I became ecstatic when I found out that a Doula was a “thing”. I love children ( would have had 10+ if I could) and I absolutely loved being pregnant. As a nanny fresh out of high school I have assisted many families with caring for their children.
I took my first doula training with DONA International in 2014 and a second with The Birth Well in 2016. In an effort to support as many growing families as I can I've added childbirth education, placenta encapsulation and a handful of other offerings to the services I provide. I enjoy building relationships with not only my clients but also other professionals and am happy to connect the two when needed.

I watched my mother — in awe as she exhibited such strength and grace during the birthing process. I knew from then on that I would never get enough of witnessing and playing a small part in the beautiful miracle of new life as it enters this world. I am now married and have three precious children of my own. My oldest son was born with a severe congenital heart defect. Only half of his heart developed correctly, so he arrived fighting for his life and immediately needed the first of three open-heart surgeries in order to survive. After having two more surgeries before the age of three, he is now stable and doing remarkably well.
My second pregnancy held another unique set of surprises as we soon discovered we would be having not one baby, but twins — a boy and a girl — to welcome into our family. With one medically fragile child, as well as twins to chase around, it has certainly been a wild, but fun, ride. When I’m not attending a birth or spending time with my crazy kiddos, I enjoy cooking, reading, and making special memories with my family.
